What Happens if You Don't Get Your Oil Changed?

Oil Change

Whether you’re driving a brand new Land Rover vehicle or you’ve got a trusted daily driver, you should be changing your oil regularly. Most vehicles will need to have an oil change every 5,000 miles or so, but many modern vehicles can even go 7,500 to 10,000 miles in between oil changes. However, keep in mind that your oil change interval can change depending on your driving habits around North Canton. Hard and excessive use on Hudson drives could result in needing more frequent oil changes.

But, what happens if you don’t change your oil? Engine oil is responsible for lubricating vital components in your vehicle’s engine. As you drive around Medina, your oil will wear down and increase friction as well as heat in your engine. The increase in friction and heat could damage your vehicle if you don’t change your oil. Looking to learn more? We’ve got you covered. Today, the service experts from Land Rover Akron will help provide you with a more in-depth answer to, “What happens if you don’t get your oil changed?” and touch on other oil maintenance tips!

Why Change Your Engine Oil?

So we know what happens if you don’t change your oil, but are there any other reasons why you should be changing it? Besides being stranded on the side of the road in Massillon, it’s also important to change your oil because:

  • Regular oil changes are a great way to reduce wear and tear on your vehicle’s engine. Reducing wear and tear means you’ll be able to drive on the Streetsboro roads for much longer.
  • High-quality motor oil often has cleaners and detergents to help reduce sludge and clean your vehicle’s engine.
  • In addition to lubricating your engine, motor oil can even neutralize acids that form from fuels, improve engine seals, and even cool your engine.

How To Change Your Oil In Your Own Green Garage

Now that you understand what happens if you don’t get your oil changed, are you wondering if you have to schedule a service appointment every time you need an oil change? While we always suggest leaving it to the professionals, if you have the necessary supplies, you may even be able to change your oil in your own Chardon or Beachwood garage. Here’s how to perform a DIY oil change:

  1. Ensure your car is securely and properly lifted.
  2. Make sure your vehicle is off and locate your oil drain plug and place an oil basin or catch directly underneath the drain plug.
  3. Unscrew the drain plug carefully and let the oil completely drain.
  4. Remove your oil filter with a specified oil filter wrench. There may be additional oil that will spill out when you remove your oil filter.
  5. With a new oil filter, place a bit of new oil around the oil filter seal and screw it back into place by hand.
  6. Locate your oil cap and remove it.
  7. Pour in the specified amount of oil that’s required for your vehicle.
  8. Place the oil cap back into place and double-check your oil level.
  9. You’ve now successfully changed your oil!

Make sure that you reference your owner’s manual for the type of oil your vehicle needs as well as the amount that it takes.
