How to Jump-Start a Car

Jumper Cables

If your vehicle isn’t starting in North Canton, you probably need to jump-start your car or get car battery service. You’ll likely go with that first option. When you follow this guide on how to jump-start a car when your battery is dead, you’ll avoid paying more by calling a jump-start car service. If your battery is getting close to its end, it’s time to get service and talk to our parts people.

The Proper Way to Jump-Start a Car

To start on this process in Massillon, you’ll need a set of jumper cables and a second vehicle. You also have the option of calling a jump-start car service like AAA. After you have this figured out, follow these steps:

  1. Have the car with the working battery park facing the other vehicle and make sure it’s turned off. Also, make sure both parking brakes are on.
  2. Open both hoods and find the batteries. You might have to take off a plastic hood to show the battery terminals.
  3. Find the positive and negative terminals. Make sure they don’t have any corrosion on them.
  4. Place the red clamp on the positive post on the dead battery.
  5. Uncoil the battery cable and hook the other red clamp onto the positive terminal of the battery that has the charged battery.
  6. Place the black clamp on the negative post on the good battery.
  7. The last clamp should be placed onto an unpainted metal surface on your car’s frame.
  8. Once you’ve got everything hooked up right, start the engine of the vehicle with the good battery first, and after that, the one with the dead battery.
  9. Once you’ve started the dead vehicle, carefully take off the jumper cables in the reverse order that you pet them on, then shut the car off that helped jump-start the dead one.
  10. Keep the engine going on the vehicle you restarted for 10 minutes to make sure the weak battery doesn’t die again right away. Check your owner’s manual for more info on recommended times.
