Land Rover started out as the Rover Company in 1885. It was a bicycle manufacturer in Warwickshire, England. It changed owners a few times before it became the titan it is today, selling some of the most luxurious SUVs North Canton can buy. Now, it’s owned by the Indian auto manufacturer Tata Motors. Who Is Tata Motors?

Tata Motors is owned by Tata Group, which is an Indian automotive manufacturer. It’s headquartered in Mumbai and started out in 1868 as a trading company. Here’s some facts about the company that answers “Who makes Land Rover vehicles?”

Tata Group made their name by opening the first hotel in India with electricity in 1907, constructing the first hydropower plant in India, and founding the Indian Institute of Science in 1911. Ford owned Land Rover, along with Jaguar Cars, and sold it to Tata Motors in 2008. These two British brands unified under Tata Motors as Jaguar Land Rover Limited in 2013.

Land Rover primarily makes the cars you see in Massillon in England. However, in the last two decades, they’ve extended their reach across the globe to Slovakia, China, and more.

  • 1947: Rover Company chairman Maurice Wilks designs the first Land Rover model, based on the axle and chassis of a Jeep.
  • April 30, 1948: The first Land Rover makes its official debut at the Amsterdam Motor Show.
  • 1967: Rover Company becomes Rover Triumph, a subsidiary of Leyland Motors (later British Leyland Motors).
  • 1978: Land Rover Limited becomes its own company under British Leyland Motors, 30 years after the first Land Rover model came out.
  • 1994: BMW acquires The Rover Group.
  • 2000: BMW breaks up The Rover Group and spins Land Rover off to Ford.
  • 2008: Mumbai-based Tata Motors purchases Land Rover and Jaguar from Ford and creates the new Jaguar Land Rover subsidiary.
